Democracy Watch Accuses Wike Of Undermining Democracy

By Ikugbadi Oluwasegun

The Democracy Watch Initiative (DWI) has accused the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, of actions it says threaten Nigeria’s democratic stability.

This was disclosed in a statement by the Group Director of Strategic Communication, Dr. Tunji O. Bamidele said DWI was compelled to address what it considers Wike’s deliberate attempts to undermine democratic institutions and political parties.

The group alleged that Wike’s recent conduct reflected a pattern of intimidation, division, and political manipulation, citing incidents in Rivers State such as the teargassing of the state assembly and the use of thugs to disperse delegates at the PDP secretariat.

DWI also accused the minister of fueling political tension in Rivers State through his public opposition to Governor Siminalayi Fubara and efforts to control the state’s political structure.

It warned that Wike’s actions now extend to the Federal Capital Territory and pose a broader threat to Nigeria’s democracy.

The group urged President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to check what it described as the minister’s excesses and called on the international community to hold accountable those undermining democratic governance.
