Gateway Football Club has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Alhaji Akeem Akintunde, the erstwhile Chairman of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Ogun State chapter, and Director of Programme Services at Ogun State Television (OGTV), who died yesterday, 11th February.

The news of his demise has sent shockwaves through the sports and media community in Nigeria, where he was widely respected for his professionalism, leadership, and unwavering commitment to the development of sports journalism.
Alhaji Akintunde was a prominent voice in Ogun sports, using his platform to promote grassroots sports development and to project the activities of sporting institutions, including Gateway FC. His tenure as SWAN Chairman was marked by unity, advocacy, and constructive engagement with stakeholders in the sports sector.
Reacting to the sad development, the General Manager of Gateway FC, Niyi Soleye described the late Akintunde as “a dependable ally of sports development and a passionate promoter of football in Ogun State.”
“Alhaji Akeem Akintunde was more than a media professional; he was a pillar in the sports ecosystem of our state. His dedication to truth, fairness, and the growth of football will not be forgotten. Gateway FC has lost a friend and supporter,” Soleye said.
He further noted that the late SWAN chairman consistently provided balanced coverage and constructive criticism that helped improve the standards of sports administration in the state.
Gateway FC extends its heartfelt condolences to his immediate family, the Ogun State chapter of SWAN, the management and staff of OGTV, and the entire sports fraternity.
