FG opts for low-key Independence day Celebration, Sanwo-Olu, Abiodun follow suit

The Nigerian Government has declared October 1 as Public holiday to celebrate Nigeria’s 60th Independence Anniversary in a low-key style calling for moderation.

According to a statement signed by the permanent Secretary, Ministry of Interior, Georgina Ehuruah on behalf of the Federal Government which the Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola praised Nigerians for the feats in the economy, education, the creative sector, amongst others.

The Statement further quoted the Minister saying,” Though celebrating sixty years of independence really calls for pomp and pageantry, but with the global COVID-19 pandemic, which has forced all nations in the world to think and act cautiously, we cannot avoid the imperative of a low-keyed celebration at this time.”

 The Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo Olu and his Ogun State Counterpart, Prince Dapo Abiodun also opted for a low-key celebration of the  Nigerian 60th Independence day Anniversary due to the ravaging effects of the Covid-19 pandemic and the need to ensure public health, safety and security.

According to a Statement issued by Mr. Gbenga Omotosho, Honourable Commissioner for Information, Lagos State and Mr. kunle Somorin, Chief Press Secretary to the Ogun State Governor respectively congratulated the people on the auspicious occasion and strongly advise that the current reality calls for a quiet celebration with adherence to Covid-19 protocols while on the other hand, Governor Abiodun has appealed to the people to celebrate at home and pray for the growth of the country.

Mr. Babjide Sanwo-Olu ordered the planned parade and other activities that involved the gathering of more than 50 people to be cancelled advising Lagosians to always wear their face mask to protect themselves and their loved ones.

For Ogun State celebrations, Prince Abiodun also instructed the relocation of the Diamond independence anniversary earlier scheduled to hold at June 12 Cultural Centre, Kuto to the Arcade ground at the State secretariat, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta while also ordering restriction of operations of motorcycles from all major roads from 10pm to 6am in the morning and reduction in the number of people gathering in the state to 20 people.

Governor Sanwo-Olu and Abiodun assured the residents of continuous protection of lives and property while urging residents to report suspicious movements to relevant security agencies
