The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has arrested a suspected car thief, Mohammed Aliyu, for allegedly attempting to steal a vehicle along Tigris Crescent, Aguiyi Ironsi Street, Maitama, Abuja.
The suspect was arrested on September 15, 2026, at about 2:00 p.m., following a distress call reporting an attempted car theft in the area.
According to a statement issued by the Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, a patrol team from the Maitama Police Division was promptly dispatched to the scene, where the suspect was arrested inside a vehicle while allegedly attempting to start and drive it away.
The statement said the vehicle, a black Hyundai Santa, belonged to Mr. Ikechukwu, who had parked it while attending an appointment at a nearby office.
Upon returning to his vehicle, Ikechukwu reportedly noticed an unfamiliar individual inside and raised an alarm, attracting the attention of people in the vicinity.
The Command disclosed that preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect had previously been arrested in two separate car theft incidents by the Garki and Zuba Divisions.
It added that Aliyu had served a prison sentence and was recently released from Keffi Prison in April 2026.
The suspect remains in police custody and will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
The Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, PhD, FCAI, urged residents to remain security-conscious and promptly report suspicious persons or activities to the nearest police station.
