The Abeokuta Grammar School Old Boys’ Association (AGSOBA) has denied reports alleging that Abeokuta Grammar School is collecting ₦10,500 from students seeking admission or registration into Junior Secondary School 1 (JSS1) and Senior Secondary School 1 (SS1).
According to a statement was signed by Agsoba (Dr.) Obafemi Kotoye, President-General of AGSOBA Global described the claim as false and expressed concern that the information was allegedly broadcast without prior verification from the school authorities.
According to the PG, Abeokuta Grammar School is not collecting ₦10,500 as a registration fee for students entering JSS1 or SS1.
He said reports involving alleged financial charges by an educational institution should be independently verified before being presented to the public. It questioned whether the school’s principal, management or other relevant authorities were contacted before the broadcast was made.
The PG on behalf of the association also called on the broadcaster and radio station involved to clarify the source of the information and explain what evidence was used to support the claim.
Among the questions raised by AGSOBA are whether the allegation was independently verified, whether the school authorities were given an opportunity to respond, and who authorised the broadcast.
The association further called for a public correction and retraction of the report, saying the same platform used to disseminate the allegation should be used to correct the information.
AGSOBA also urged the media organisation to review its editorial and verification procedures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The association acknowledged the media’s role in investigating institutions and reporting matters of public interest but stressed that such responsibilities should be exercised with accuracy, fairness and accountability.
AGSOBA further appealed to parents, prospective students, old boys and members of the public to seek clarification directly from the appropriate school authorities rather than relying on unverified information circulating through social media, informal channels or broadcast platforms.
Established in 1908, Abeokuta Grammar School has a long-standing history in Nigeria’s education sector. AGSOBA said it would continue to engage relevant authorities and stakeholders to protect the reputation and heritage of the institution.
