Nigeria’s FIFA Petition Against DR Congo Considered “Strong” as 2026 World Cup Hopeful

By our Reporter

Shehu Dikko, National Sports Commission chairman, says Nigeria has a strong case after the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) filed a petition to FIFA over DR Congo’s squad. The protest followed Nigeria’s loss to DR Congo in the African World Cup playoffs, with claims that DR Congo fielded players who did not meet nationality requirements before being cleared to play.

Mohammed Sanusi, NFF general secretary noted that several players held European passports and alleged the clearances were fraudulent. Dikko described Nigeria’s case as solid, emphasizing it is based on the rules rather than sour feelings, and expressed concerns that DR Congo may not have fully complied with regulations.

DR Congo’s football federation dismissed the allegations on social media, warning against attempts to overturn results off the pitch. FIFA has acknowledged receipt of Nigeria’s complaint and is reviewing the documents. Should the governing body confirm any rule violations, DR Congo could face disqualification, potentially reinstating Nigeria or the next eligible team for the intercontinental playoff in March. No deadline for FIFA’s decision has been provided.
