Over 20 soldiers have reportedly been killed when suspected Islamic State fighters unleashed attack on a Nigerian military camp in Karito, Borno State.
According to reports, the tragic incident occurred on Saturday when the fighters launched a coordinated deadly attack using various weapons, including a car bomb.
The exact number of casualties has not been officially confirmed yet. However, military sources reported that about 20 soldiers lost their lives, and several others were wounded during violent clashes.
The fighters allegedly took control of the camp, setting it ablaze and destroying military equipment, including a vehicle.
They also seized several four-wheel drive vehicles and heavy machine guns before retreating from the area.
Following the attack, the Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, expressed his condolences to the families of the fallen soldiers, condemning the assault as a reminder of the ongoing threat posed by insurgents.
Governor Zulum reassured the public of the government’s continued efforts to restore peace and security in the region, vowing to press on with resettlement and development programs despite the attack.
He thanked the armed forces for their unwavering commitment to securing the state and called on the people to support the military in their ongoing fight against the terrorists.
