President Bola Tinubu has mourned the death of elder statesman and Afenifere leader, Pa Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti, who died at the age of 100, describing him as a symbol of integrity, discipline and commitment to Nigeria’s progress.

Tinubu, in a condolence statement issued by the State House on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, commiserated with the Fasoranti family, the people of Akure Kingdom, the Ondo State Government, the South-West and the entire Afenifere family.

The President described the late Fasoranti as an icon and one of the last great figures in the progressive political tradition associated with the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo.

He said the centenarian’s life was marked by an unwavering commitment to the Yoruba people, true federalism, social justice and the unity and development of Nigeria.

Tinubu recalled Fasoranti’s contributions to public service, from his career as an educationist and school principal to his tenure as Commissioner for Finance in the old Ondo State and later leadership of Afenifere.

The President also credited the late elder statesman with making significant contributions to Nigeria’s democratic development, noting that he risked his life in the struggle for the democracy the country enjoys today.

He said Nigeria would miss Fasoranti’s wisdom, moral authority and fatherly counsel, particularly at a time when the country needed his guidance.

Tinubu recalled celebrating Fasoranti’s 100th birthday on May 11, 2026, describing the occasion as a celebration not only of longevity but also of a life distinguished by honour and service.

The President also recounted a visit to the elder statesman’s residence in Akure in 2022, when he informed him of his decision to contest the presidency. According to Tinubu, Fasoranti prayed for him and expressed confidence that he would become President during his lifetime.

“Pa Fasoranti told me I would be President in his lifetime, and God answered his prayer,” Tinubu said.

He added that he had hoped the elder statesman would live to witness the country’s anticipated economic growth and prosperity during a possible second term in office.

Despite the loss, Tinubu urged Nigerians to be grateful for Fasoranti’s long life of service and fulfilment.

He prayed for the peaceful repose of the deceased’s soul and asked God to comfort his family and all those mourning him.
