The Government of Kwara has clarified it’s stance on usage of hijaab and appealed for Peace saying all Public Schools in Kwara belongs to Government.
This was disclosed in a statement signed by Prof. Mamma Saba Jibril , Secretary to the State Government with the caption: correcting misconceptions about ‘missionary schools’ and hijaab in Kwara State.
The Statement read: The Kwara State Government wishes to once again make clarifications regards it’s position on the ownership of schools and the question of hijaab.
It explains that government took control of schools in 1974 but before then, ownership cut across the faiths and private individuals. Now,all are now run as public institutions.
As a result of that, there are laws of Kwara State education of 1996 which is clear about status of the school and rules guiding them. Such rules include pluralism in the recruitment of students and teachers.
Prof Jibril in the statement further said argument over the years on the ownership that schools belongs to muslim and christian which has been rejected by the court.
In addition, the law today is that any willing muslim girl cannot be stopped from wearing hijaab in public schools.
The statement clarified further that government is not imposing the use of hijaab and that names of schools formerly owned by missions are left as a mark of honour and contributions.
Thus, the government has approved hijaab for school girls and also respect the fundamental human right of the school girls adding members of the public and religious organisatios should allow peace to reign in the state.
The statement ended: “Government cautions against comment or conduct that can lead to breakdown of peace and harmony for which Kwara states and it’s people are know over the years”.
