Commanding Officer Killed as Boko Haram Attacks Another Military Base

A commanding officer has been killed after suspected insurgents from Boko Haram launched a fresh attack on a military base in Borno State.

A resident of the affected community said the attack occurred around 12:30 a.m., when the insurgents reportedly stormed the town from multiple directions before targeting the military installation.

“They came from different sides of the town and launched an assault on the military camp,” the source said.

Security sources disclosed that the attackers overwhelmed the troops, forcing them to retreat from the base. The insurgents were also said to have set several military vehicles ablaze and made away with ammunition during the raid.

“I cannot say much about the casualties, but it is very sad that we lost the commanding officer here,” one of the security sources said.

The development marks a tragic turn for the troops stationed in the area. Just last month, insurgents had attempted to overrun the same base but were repelled by soldiers who reportedly killed several attackers during the confrontation.

The successful defence of the base at the time drew praise from members of the community, with the commanding officer receiving accolades and commendations, particularly on social media.

The lawmaker representing Kukawa Local Government Area in the Borno State House of Assembly, Karta Maina Ma’aji Lawan, had also joined residents in celebrating the troops after the earlier victory.

Reacting to the latest attack, the lawmaker described the incident as unfortunate, expressing sadness that the military base was eventually overrun.

The incident comes days after terrorists attacked a military base and an Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Ngoshe, leaving an unspecified number of soldiers and civilians dead.
