Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have reportedly arrested over 72 students of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State.
The anti-graft agency carried out the raid in early hours of Monday, November 1st.
It was learnt that the early morning raid was on two major off-campus hostels in the town, and the students and their vehicles were taken to the Ibadan office of the commission.
Reports indicated the some EFCC officers stormed various hostels within the Oduduwa Estate in Ile Ife, where OAU is situated and reportedly took students from their rooms, plunging them into a state of confusion and fear.
It was reported that one of the students who was allegedly taken away, managed to retain her mobile phone and secretly reached out for help through a group chat.
It was learnt that her distress signal triggered a rapid dissemination of information on social media platforms, particularly Twitter, where individuals mobilized to support the victims.
Similarly, the EFCC officials reportedly took away substantial number of valuable possessions, including cars, phones, and electronic gadgets.
As at the time of filing this report, the Nigerian Voice could not yet independently confirm the incident. Also, the EFCC has yet to speak on the operation.
Meanwhile, Akinremi Abass, OAU Students’ Union President, who confirmed the incident, said the union leadership is on the way to Ibadan to learn more about the early morning incident.
