The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has cautioned residents to halt the sale, purchase, and use of firecrackers, knockouts, explosives, and all forms of unauthorised pyrotechnics as the Ember-months festivities draw near.

In a statement on Monday, the spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, raised concern over the growing circulation of these items across Abuja. She stressed that firecrackers pose serious safety threats, including injuries, fire outbreaks, panic, and an easy cover for criminals to carry out unlawful acts unnoticed.
According to the statement, the uncontrolled use of fireworks also disturbs public peace and puts vulnerable groups at risk, especially children, the elderly, and people with health conditions. Residents were urged to strictly comply with the directive.
The command further noted that officers have been deployed to enforce the ban, with orders to arrest and prosecute any violators. Citizens are encouraged to remain alert and report anyone involved in selling or using firecrackers within the territory.
Similar bans have been announced by the Police Commands in Imo and Plateau States as Christmas and New Year celebrations approach. Both states said the restriction is necessary to prevent injuries, fires, and avoidable disturbances during the holiday period.
