The recently appointed coach of the Nigerian Super Eagles team, Finidi George, has resigned his position.
His resignation comes as a surprise after the NFF confirmed the search for a foreign Technical Adviser following a poor run in the WCQ.
The NFF and the Minister for sports summoned Finidi to a meeting earlier this week after he lost to Benin Republic in the ongoing World Cup Qualifiers, denying Nigeria of a smooth sail to securing a place in the world cup.
Though no official statement has been released by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) or Finidi George himself to confirm his resignation or regarding the reasons behind the development, however, an ex-Super Eagles media officer, Toyin Ibitoye, confirmed it in a post on X.com on Saturday.
He wrote, “News just in. Finidi George #FinidiGeorge_FG has resigned from his #NGSuperEagles manager position.”
The 53-year-old was appointed last month ahead of the World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and the Benin Republic
He took the rein after Jose Peseiro’s contract ended in February, having served as his assistant for 20 months.
However, the team’s disappointing performance in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin led to his demotion.
As a result, George’s one-year contract will be downgraded, and his reported monthly salary of N15m will be reduced to N5m.
His handpicked assistants will also be replaced by the new foreign coach’s staff.
