General Brice Oligui Nguema, Gabon military leader, has won the Saturday presidential election with over 90 per cent of the votes cast defeating seven other candidates according to provisional results.

According to Hermann Immongault, Interior Minister General Brice Oligui Nguema recorded a landslide victory with 90.35% of votes cast, defeating seven other candidates, including Alain Claude Bilie-By-Nze, immediate past Prime Minister. He came in a distant second with 3% of votes cast after announcing the provisional results.

The Interior Ministry announced a turnout of 87.21% in the election in which some 920,000 voters, including over 28,000 overseas, were registered to participate across more than 3,000 polling stations.

General Brice Oligui Nguema is the military leader who led the military coup that cut short the 55 years of dynastic rule of the Bongo family.

The Bongo dynasty had ruled Gabon through a web of patronage, distributing influential posts to allies and family members.
