A group of 35 lawmakers in the House of Representatives are seeking amendment to the 1999 Constitution to give room for the rotation of the Presidency among the six geo-political zones of the country.

They also want an alteration to the Constitution to provide for “A single tenure of six years for the President and Governors of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

The lawmakers are also proposing an alteration to the Constitution to create two vice presidents from the southern and northern parts of Nigeria.

Speaking on Monday behalf of the group on Monday at the National Assembly, the member representing Ideato South/Ideato North Federal Constituency, Imo State, Ikenga Ugochinyere, said: “The reduction in government spending and wastage, efficiency in governance, and national stability by providing a single term of six years for the President and Governors,” will go a long way in cost-cutting measures.”

It was learnt that the lawmakers have produced 50 proposed alterations and six of the bills have been listed on the floor of the House.

“Constitutional Amendment to provide that the President and the 1st Vice President shall come from the same part of the country (north or south) and the 1st Vice President shall become President whenever the President becomes incapacitated, i.e., V.P. (Succession), V.P. (Administration and Economy),” Ugochinyere said.

Ugochinyere said the current Constitution of the country had shown a huge gap that must be addressed.
