The House of Representatives has rejected the conferment of the Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR) on its presiding officer, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas.
During plenary on Wednesday, lawmakers said it is unacceptable for President Bola Tinubu to confer the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON) on Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, chief justice of Nigeria (CJN), while reserving CFR for the house Speaker.
The house passed the resolution following the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by Philip Agbese, lawmaker from Benue.
In his Independence Day broadcast on Tuesday, Tinubu announced that Akpabio and Kekere-Ekun will be conferred with the GCON, while Abbas and Barau Jibrin, deputy president of the senate, will get CFR.
The president also said Benjamin Kalu, deputy speaker of the house of representatives, will receive the Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON).
The date for the conferment is yet to be announced.
