Many worshippers are feared dead while several persons are believed to be trapped in the rubble after a mosque collapsed in Lagos, southwest Nigeria.
It was learnt that the incident happened in the Papa Ajao area of Mushin on Sunday afternoon during the prayer time (Zuhr prayer) and resulted in casualties and injuries.
However, multiple videos seen showed how some bodies were being recovered from the collapsed building. The number of casualties could not be ascertained when filing this report.
Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Emergency Management Authourity, LASEMA, Dr. Femí Oke-Osanyitolu, who is presently at the scene of the collapse, said evacuation of survivors and search for trapped victims were still ongoing.
“The area has been cordoned off to allow for seamless rescue operations. I can’t confirm any number of casualities as rescue operation is on-going,” Oke-Osanyitolu
Building collapse is common in Lagos State and many of them are tragic.
It was learnt that at least 61 buildings collapsed across Nigerian states in 2022.
Lagos State tops the list with a record of 20 incidents, according to the Building Collapse Prevention Guild (BCPG) report.
