Medical Director, Two Doctors Suspended Over the Death of Chimamanda Adichie’s Son

The Medical and Dental Practitioners Investigation Panel has suspended Dr. Tunde Majekodunmi, Medical Director of Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital, and two other doctors over findings of medical negligence in the treatment of 21-month-old Nkanu Adichie-Esege.

Nkanu, one of the twin sons of acclaimed author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and her husband, Ivara Esege, died on January 7, 2026, after a brief illness.

In a statement dated January 10, 2026, Adichie alleged negligence, explaining that her son was taken to Euracare in Lagos for an MRI scan and insertion of a central line after what seemed like a common cold “turned into a very serious infection.”

During the procedure, the child was sedated but was reportedly not properly monitored after receiving propofol, leading to loss of responsiveness, seizures, and cardiac arrest.

Adichie said, “He would be alive today if not for an incident at Euracare Hospital on January 6th.”

After reviewing complaints against 21 doctors, examining counter-affidavits and hearing oral depositions under oath, the panel suspended Majekodunmi, Euracare’s anesthesiologist Dr. Titus Ogundare, and Dr. Atinuke Uwajeh of Atlantis Pediatric Hospital.

The trio is barred from practicing medicine in Nigeria pending determination of their cases by the Medical and Dental Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal.

The investigation concluded at the panel’s 25th session held in Abuja on February 17 and 18, 2026.
