Nigeria and Renewed Stampedes in 2024

Nigeria has witnessed a series of tragic stampedes in 2024, resulting in 98 deaths.

These incidents occurred during distributions of free food, palliatives, or other items. The causes of these stampedes are multifaceted, but they may be linked to hunger, greed, or poverty.

Recent incidents include: a Custom stampede in Yaba, Lagos, where seven lives were lost; a palliative distribution in Sokoto State, resulting in nine deaths; a university event in Nasarawa State, where two students died ; a philanthropic event in Bauchi, claiming four lives ; a school funfair in Ibadan, where 35 children died ; a food distribution event in Abuja, resulting in 10 deaths and a rice and gift-sharing event in Anambra, where 20 lives were lost.

The allure of rice palliatives has proven too great for some Nigerians, leading to devastating stampedes that have resulted in casualties.

Despite advocacy efforts, many individuals’ mindsets remain unchanged, prioritizing immediate gains over caution and safety.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has pointed fingers at the organizers of palliative sharing events, but it’s essential to acknowledge that greed also plays a significant role in these tragic events.

To prevent such tragedies, authorities have mandated approval for palliative distributions. Organizers can also adopt more orderly methods, such as doorstep delivery, to avoid endangering lives. Ultimately, Nigerians must prioritize their safety and well-being when faced with offers of free items.

As Nigeria celebrates, it’s crucial to remember the true reason for the season. Christmas is a time for love, kindness, and generosity, not just about material gifts or food. Nigerians must reflect on their values and priorities, ensuring that the spirit of the season isn’t lost amidst the chaos of rice sharing and eating that will lead to stampedes.

In the midst of celebrations, it’s vital to prioritize safety, compassion, and empathy. By doing so, Nigerians can create a more meaningful and joyful Christmas and New year experience that goes beyond mere physical sustenance.
