Youths have converged in their thousands in different parts of Lagos and in other State demanding for an executive order in support of the Inspector general of Police announcement on disbandment of Federal Anti-Robbery Squad(FSARS).
The Inspector General of Police during a press briefing on Sunday in response to the #EndSARS after due consultation with the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,Muhammadu Buhari announced the dissolution of SARS and announced afterwards the officer in those division will be deployed to other units.
He said a new policing arrangement to address armed robbery and other violent crimes that fall within the mandate of the dissolved tactical unit would be presented in due course.
Announcing the decision at the Force headquarters, Abuja on Sunday, Adamu acknowledged the inalienable rights of citizens to freedom of association and expression.
At a press briefing, the IG had described the #EndSARS agitation as a manifestation of the natural desire of the citizens to participate in matters concerning policing and internal security in the nation.
The police boss disclosed that the clamour for the scrapping of the SARS as a unit in the Nigeria Police Force had been under constant monitoring and due assessment by the government.
Adamu said, “Following a review of the current developments and in due cognizance of the wide and legitimately-held concerns of well-meaning citizens on the existence and operations of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, as a responsive and citizens-oriented Police Force, it is hereby directed as follows:
“The Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the Nigeria Police, otherwise known as SARS, is hereby dissolved across all Formations, the 36 State Police Commands and the Federal Capital Territory, where they currently exist.
“All officers and men currently serving in the unit are to be redeployed with immediate effect.
In a swift response, Nigerians have said no to the mere television announcement demanding for an executive order so the exercise won’t be a wasted one.
Youths in Lagos who converged in their thousands at Lekki bridge, Unilag Gate and some parts of Ikeja continued to pour out their anger through hastag #SARSMUST END.
As at the time of filing these reports, youths in kwara are currently in front of the Government house in their large numbers while other States are also converging in different locations to join voices around the country and globally.
According to one of the protesters who preferred anonymity said, ”SARS was “reformed” in 2015 SARS was “restructured” in 2016 SARS was “reorganized” in 2017 SARS was “reformed” in 2018 SARS was “disbanded” in 2019 SARS was “dissolved” in 2020 The only thing that changes every year is the WORD they use. We are tired of audio banning”.
