The management of Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ogun State has increased should fees by over 160 per cent across all the faculties of the university. It was learnt that the newly increased school fees were uploaded on the school portal on Thursday.
Medical students’ school fees were increased from N186,896 to N550,000 representing about 194 percent increase.
Other faculties school fees were also increased from N114,038 to N300,000, N160,500 to N450,000, and N92,872 to N260,000, which caused an uproar among students.
Reacting to the development the OOU Students’ Union Government (SUG) has kicked against the hike in tuition fees by the management of the institution and has asked students not to pay the new hike fees.
According to a statement issued on Thursday by Ogunsanya Bamidele, the SUG president said, “The recent decision by the school management to increase school fees is not taken lightly.
We acknowledge the economic challenges facing the nation, but we firmly believe that education should not be treated as a mere business venture.
“Our administration stands against this increment, emphasising that students should not be viewed as a source of revenue. Education is a right, and its accessibility should not be compromised by financial barriers. In these trying times, our priority should be to find solutions that benefit every student of our esteemed university.
We urge you, our dear students not to pay the increased fees and refrain from participating in any school activities until further directives from the union.”
