After the suspension of the nationwide strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of universities (ASUU), Nigerian students have lamented lecturers’ unpreparedness for classes despite the reopening of schools on 18th January, 2021.
Our Correspondents who monitored schools resumption at Federal University of technology, Akure, said students and staff adhered to COVID 19 protocols both in offices and hostels, but lecturers, according to the students, are yet to commence physical classes since 18th resumption date.
In an interview with a student who preferred anonymity, it was gathered the students have only been asked to do series assignment through Google classroom, while most classes fixed had been cancelled. The Students further alleged that they were promised notes but no physical class has taken place. After eleven months of strike, how are we expected to answer questions without any form of learning, one student asked.
At the University of Lagos, meanwhile, students were asked to resume on the 25th January, 2020, but our correspondents who spoke to students were told the school’s website was down. “The school has not shown any form of seriousness as far as resumption is concerned,” one student alleged.
Another student, however, alleged that online and physical classes were yet to commence after the students had paid school fees and the government is paying salary.
At Macpherson, Afe Babalola and Elizade Universities, students have resumed both virtual and physical classes with strict observation of COVID-19 protocols, while examination has been scheduled to hold in the month of March.
