The Benin-Lagos Expressway was blocked for hours by the protesting students of the Ugbowo campus of the university.
The protesting students who carried placards bearing inscriptions as: ‘Federal Uni don turn BOWEN’; ‘UNIBEN no be BOWEN, urgent 20k no be our budget’; ‘Oppression comes in different forms’; ‘We didn’t sign for this injustice’, played solidarity songs with public address sound system.
It was gathered that the protest was as a result of the alleged increase in fees for late payment by the University’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Lilian Salami.
According to a source, “Our VC has added N20k to fees for late payment just after 3 weeks of resumption and failure to pay with the increment by Friday, will lead to forfeiting admission.
The initial school fee was N70k before but she added a sum of N20k for the 100-level entry students. A lot of students are yet to pay. Even the students’ union body approached her for a dialogue but the VC refused to heed leading to the protest we have today.
The entire Benin-Lagos federal road was on standstill at the moment due to the protest. We urge the relevant authorities to wade into the matter.”
