Seun Kuti, singer and youngest son of Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, has said his public disagreement with fellow music star Wizkid achieved its intended purpose by drawing attention to what he described as the misuse of his father’s legacy.
The Afrobeat artiste made the remark during an appearance on TVC’s Your View programme, themed Inside the Mind of Seun Anikulapo-Kuti.
Reflecting on the online clash that sparked widespread debate about Fela’s influence and legacy, Seun said he believed the exchange was worthwhile.
“I think it achieved a lot. The point I’m trying to make is that it’s still not acceptable for one to claim to be aligned with the ideals of someone and the same person’s team works effectively, like consciously, to drag that person’s name down. That doesn’t make sense to me,” he said.
During the interview, Seun also declined to comment extensively on social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), and his campaign for national change.
When asked whether he believed VDM was genuinely fighting to liberate Nigeria, Seun responded by urging the television station to invite the activist for questioning.
“You can invite him for an interview and ask him. He said he’s not political, that he’s doing charity, abi?” he said.
Responding to another question on whether he considered himself arrogant, Seun rejected the description.
“I don’t think I’m arrogant because the authority is that of knowledge, so I can’t put it to myself,” he said.
The interview comes about six months after Seun and Wizkid engaged in an online dispute that generated widespread conversations about Fela Anikulapo-Kuti’s legacy and influence in the Nigerian music industry.
