The Delta State Police Command has intensified its enforcement against illegal roadblocks and unauthorised revenue collection on highways, arresting nine suspects during a statewide operation aimed at restoring safety and free movement across the state.
The command said the operation was carried out in compliance with the Federal Government’s directive to eliminate extortion and criminal activities on Nigerian roads.
According to a statement issued on Saturday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, the enforcement exercise commenced on Friday, July 24, targeting notorious locations where illegal toll collection and roadblocks have disrupted traffic and exposed motorists to harassment.
Edafe disclosed that the nine suspects were arrested at strategic points, including the Head Bridge axis, the Delta-Anambra boundary, and the Benin-Asaba Expressway near Agbor.
He said the suspects are currently in police custody and will be charged in court upon the conclusion of investigations.
The police spokesperson reaffirmed the command’s commitment to restoring sanity and ensuring the safety of road users across Delta State, noting that similar enforcement operations would be extended to other parts of the state.
“The Delta State Police Command reiterates its commitment to restoring sanity and safety on highways across the state. Similar enforcement exercises will be replicated in other parts of Delta to ensure that motorists and commuters travel without harassment or illegal levies,” the statement said.
The command also appealed to members of the public to cooperate with law enforcement officers by providing useful information and supporting efforts to eradicate illegal roadblocks and extortion on the state’s highways.
