One person is feared dead following a fresh armed robbery attack along the Nawfia axis of the Onitsha–Enugu Expressway in Anambra State, raising fresh concerns over the security of motorists using the busy highway.
The incident was brought to public attention by a social media user, who alleged that armed robbers have continued to terrorise commuters and residents despite efforts by the host community to curb the attacks.
According to the source, residents of Nawfia recently carried out a large-scale environmental clean-up, clearing thick vegetation and removing logs allegedly used by the criminals to barricade sections of the road and ambush unsuspecting travellers.
However, the source lamented that the exercise has failed to deter the attackers, who were said to have resumed operations with increasing boldness.
He added that a video circulating on social media allegedly captured the latest attack, during which one person was reportedly killed.
The development has heightened fear among commuters using the Onitsha–Enugu Expressway, one of the busiest highways in the South-East.
The source called on the Anambra State Government and security agencies to intensify surveillance, deploy regular patrol teams and dismantle suspected criminal hideouts along the expressway to prevent further attacks.
Residents and motorists also appealed to the police, the military and other security agencies to take urgent, coordinated action to restore safety and public confidence on the route.
As of the time of filing this report, the Anambra State Police Command had yet to issue an official statement on the reported incident.
