The African Union Commission has commended the conduct of Uganda’s recent presidential elections and congratulated President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on his re-election, amid ongoing efforts to strengthen democracy across the continent.
In a statement released by Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Chairperson of the African Union, hailed the polls held on January 15, 2026, as a positive step forward.
Museveni secured a commanding 71.61% of the votes, extending his long tenure as Uganda’s leader
Youssouf also expressed “sincere appreciation” to Goodluck Jonathan, the former president of Nigeria, for his “sterling leadership” of the joint election observation mission organized by the African Union, the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD).
The AU chairperson reiterated the commission’s commitment to supporting democracy and effective governance in Africa.
He applauded the Ugandan people for their dedication to “consolidating democratic gains, peace, security, and development.”
