The Akinsiku of Lagos, Chief Adebola Dosunmu, has expressed his displeasure with the way the Eyo masquerade is portrayed in the currently popular film Gangs of Lagos in Nigeria.
In a report, the head reportedly highlighted that Eyo has a certain procedure and is not intended for watching movies or attending parties. He also stated that Lagosians dislike the film and won’t put up with it.
The traditional chief claims that Eyo should only be held in honor of late monarchs, chiefs, or people who made important contributions to Lagos.
According to him, “Eyo Gbogbogbo” refers to the general one, and it will take us at least three months to prepare for that. So someone will simply show up with the fila (hat) and everything on and claim to be practicing Eyo, but it’s not allowed. If something happens, you carry your cross even if it’s not today or tomorrow.
Chief Dosunmu forewarned that it is improper for anyone to decide to bring out Eyo without appropriate planning since such activities would have repercussions.
