Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has approved extension of the deadline for the registration of Data Controllers and Data Processors of Major Importance (DCPMIs) till October 31, 2024.
A statement by Babatunde Bamigboye, Head, of Legal Enforcement & Regulation, notes that Vincent Olatunji, National Commissioner of the Commission wants to ensure accountability in line with provisions of the Act of the Commission 2024 which stipulates that Data Controllers, Processors Of Major Importance shall only engage agents and contractors who are duly registered with the Commission (as at 15th October 2024) for the processing of personal data.
The Commission enjoins data controllers and data processors of major importance to immediately ensure that those who process personal data on their behalf fulfil the obligation to register as required by law as the engagement of an agent or contractor who does not comply with the principles and obligations of NDP Act is a contravention which attracts imminent sanctions.
