Andy Burnham, the former Mayor of Greater Manchester, has become the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, making him the country’s seventh prime minister in the last 10 years.
Keir Starmer officially resigned on Monday after meeting King Charles III at Buckingham Palace.
Burnham is now the UK’s 59th prime minister. During a private meeting at Buckingham Palace, King Charles invited him to form a new government.
In a statement, Buckingham Palace confirmed Burnham’s appointment, saying: “His Majesty received in audience the Rt Hon Andrew Burnham MP and requested him to form a new Administration. The Rt Hon Andrew Burnham MP accepted The King’s offer and kissed hands upon his appointment as Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury.”
Burnham succeeded Starmer as leader of the Labour Party last week.
In his final speech outside 10 Downing Street, Starmer said he was leaving office “with good grace” and “a smile,” adding that his “work is done.”
