The Lagos State House of Assembly has cautioned its ousted Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, to refrain from actions that could disrupt the legislative process in the state.
This warning came after Obasa, upon his return to Lagos from the United States, claimed that his removal did not follow proper procedures.
In a statement released on Saturday, the assembly reaffirmed its support for the newly elected Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, and its decision to remove Obasa on January 13.
The lawmakers reiterated that over two-thirds of the assembly members backed the new Speaker and stood by their impeachment decision.
The statement condemned Obasa’s actions as inappropriate, urging him to adopt a peaceful approach for the state’s well-being.
The assembly also emphasized that any attempts to create unrest would be met with resistance from the majority.
The lawmakers pledged to uphold peace and protect the integrity of the assembly.
The statement released by Hon. Ogundipe Stephen Olukayode read, “The Lagos State House of Assembly wishes to clarify that over two-thirds of its members remain firmly united in support of the new Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda. We reaffirm the decision taken on January 13, 2025, where Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa was impeached. As elected representatives of the people of Lagos, our commitment is to uphold good governance and maintain a harmonious relationship with other arms of government.
“The position of the House remains unchanged. The claims and position being canvassed by the former Speaker, Rt. Hon. Obasa, are both uncalled for and unparliamentary.
“The majority of members elected Rt. Hon. Obasa as Speaker for the 10th Assembly. However, at the said plenary, a majority decision was taken to remove him, and we stand by the election of Rt. Hon. Meranda as the new Speaker.
“All members of the Assembly were elected from their respective constituencies across the state, and under the relevant statutory orders, they retain the inalienable right to remove principal officers, including the Speaker.
“We therefore appeal to the former Speaker to embrace peace and harmony, as exemplified by other members. His current posture of resistance threatens to destabilize the polity and does not serve the best interests of Lagos State. Any attempt to disrupt the peace will be firmly resisted by the majority of distinguished members who unanimously support Rt. Hon. Meranda.
“Lagos desires peace, and peace we shall achieve.”
