Don’t Use Soldiers to Quell Protest, Atiku Urges FG

Atiku Abubakar, PDP 2023 Presidential candidate, has again implored the Federal government of Nigeria not to use soldiers to suppress protest against bad governance.

The former vice president made this statement on his X handle, following the acknowledgement of an unfortunate incident by the Nigerian Army, while admitting to the loss of life of a young protester via a stray bullet.

The Nigerian Army has therefore, detained the officer who did such an irreversible job against the life of the young protester.

Atiku Abubakar further praised the Nigerian Army for responding swiftly to the issue, pointing to the fact that it was a win for the rule of law.

In his statement, he cordially advised the service chiefs, and military men against using force to quench a thirst for good governance.

“I have consistently advised the service chiefs and military commanders that the use of lethal force against peaceful protesters must not be authorized. Upholding the principle of accountability is paramount, and the actions taken by the Nigerian Army in apprehending and, hopefully, prosecuting the soldier responsible for this incident align with this fundamental principle.”

He added: “Even amidst conflicts, it is crucial to adhere to rules of engagement. Soldiers should not be deployed to suppress civil rights protests.”
