FG to scrap common entrance exam for JSS admissions

The federal government has announced plans to phase out the common entrance examination for pupils transitioning from primary school to junior secondary school (JSS).

Tunji Alausa, minister of education, disclosed this during an interactive session with journalists in Lagos, stating that the exam will be replaced with a Continuous Assessment (CA) system.

According to him, the new system will track a pupil’s academic performance from primary one and remain valid even if the pupil transfers to another school.

“The Continuous Assessment will reflect a pupil’s performance from primary one, and it will follow them wherever they go,” he said.

Alausa also revealed that the government plans to introduce a Learner Identification Number (LIN) for all pupils at the primary level. The initiative is aimed at enabling authorities to monitor students’ academic progress and improve retention through to senior secondary school.

In addition, he said efforts are underway to revive the school feeding programme, which will be moved from the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs to the Federal Ministry of Education for better oversight.

The move, he noted, is part of broader strategies to boost enrolment and encourage more pupils to attend public schools.
