FG to Spend just N8bn on Sensitizing Nigerians on Electricity Bill Payments – Adelabu

The Federal Ministry of Power has proposed a budget of N8 billion for a nationwide public sensitization campaign aimed at encouraging timely payment of electricity bills in 2025.

This was revealed by the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, on Monday while presenting the ministry’s budget to the National Assembly’s joint committee on power.

According to Mr. Adelabu, the advocacy campaign will be executed across various channels, including social media, digital platforms, and traditional print media, to ensure it reaches the entire population.

“With a population exceeding 200 million, we must cover every communication channel—social, digital, and print media—to effectively carry out this advocacy. Hence, we have earmarked N8 billion for the initiative,” he stated.

The minister emphasized the need for public orientation to help citizens understand the importance of safeguarding national power infrastructure. He also highlighted the campaign’s goal of reducing power theft and ensuring regular bill payments.

“Our people need to be re-educated and re-oriented to see power infrastructure as a national asset that requires collective protection. They must also understand the need to avoid power theft. When they notice something unusual, they should report it,” he explained.

Mr. Adelabu further stressed that prompt bill payment is critical to the sustainability of the power sector. “We believe a comprehensive advocacy, re-orientation, and re-education program is necessary to address these issues,” he concluded.
