By Yusuf Olukokun

Ghana Supreme Court of Law has begun the hearings against the Anti-LGBTQ laws of the state today, Wednesday, May 8 2024.

In February 2024, the Ghanaian Lawmakers approved Sexual Rights and Family Value Bills which was condemned internationally but has been equally supported by citizens of the country.

In the political atmosphere in Ghana, with Akufo Addo, current Ghanaian President, looking forward to be succeeded by December, the LGBTQ discussions have entirely dominated the space, although, the Lawmakers are yet to announce any new law on it.

A Ghanaian Broadcaster, Richard Dela-Sky has legally challenged the originality of the law against LGBTQ. The Judges of the court has given Richard extra seven days to file more cases with more documents to antagonize the anti-LGBTQ bill.

According to Channels Television, Ghana attorney general has requested for live broadcast for the hearings to allow “transparency”.

“It is my respectful view that the transparency to be engendered by a coverage of the proceedings would be in the best interest of the administration of justice,” the attorney’s office said in a letter.

However, Akufo Addo, has assertively stressed not to sign off any new law on LGBTQ until the legal issues have been totally resolved.

The bill has led to a lot of reactions from different countries even United States of America, and Ghana Ministry of Finance, positing that they may lose billions of dollars from World Bank.
