The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) has approved the Kwara State University Teaching Hospital as a training institution for the preclinical medical programme of Kwara State University.

The approval followed a successful accreditation exercise and was disclosed in a statement issued on Wednesday by Yakub Kamaldeen Aliagan, Head of Corporate Affairs at KWASUTH.
Confirming the development, the Kwara State Commissioner for Health, Aminat El Imam, said the decision came after a detailed presentation to the MDCN accreditation team led by its Deputy Registrar, Nnaemeka Nwakama.
She described the approval as a major boost to healthcare delivery and medical education in the state, noting that both the teaching hospital and the university’s preclinical programme have now received full accreditation.
The accreditation exercise included a briefing session held at the MBA Study Centre of KWASU in Ilorin, where stakeholders highlighted the preparedness of both institutions for the programme.
El Imam commended the MDCN team for its professionalism and assured that all identified gaps would be addressed ahead of the next assessment. She also reiterated the commitment of the administration of AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq to strengthening the health sector through sustained investment in infrastructure and manpower.
In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor of KWASU, Shaykh-Luqman Jimoh, welcomed the development, describing it as the result of strong collaboration and institutional diligence.
Earlier, Nwakama praised the Kwara State Government for upgrading the General Hospital to a teaching hospital, noting that the move would improve access to quality healthcare. He also urged the state to address all identified gaps before the next accreditation visit to avoid any disruption.
With the approval, 300-level Medicine and Surgery students of KWASU can now proceed to clinical training at KWASUTH after completing their First Professional Examination.
