Background

My name is Olamide Emida Idris. I am from Ijebu Igbo in Ogun State. I graduated from the Department of Accounting at the University of Lagos with a CGPA of 4.95. As a result, I emerged as the best-graduating student in the Department of Accounting, in the Faculty of Management Sciences, and in the field of Humanities at the University of Lagos for the 2023/2024 academic session.

Why Did You Choose To Study Accounting?

My brother inspired me to study accounting because it would allow me to work anywhere. There are a lot of fields I could explore in accounting, ranging from taxation, auditing, financial reporting, and other areas in finance like investment banking. It will also allow me to work in several industries.

You Graduate As The Best Student In Your Faculty. What Is The Thing You Do That Makes You Stand Out From Your Other Colleagues?

I am committed to excellence. My mindset is always to be the best in every situation I find myself. You know every achievement starts as a desire. This drives my actions, as I avoided distractions and only engaged in things that took me closer to achieving my desire. I primarily dedicated my time to learning, acquiring knowledge, and gaining experience.

In The Era Of Social Media, How Did You Balance Academic Activities With Social Activities?

I was not very social during my journey at the University of Lagos, except for watching football matches and movies in my hostel. I avoided distractions and did only the things that mattered to my life. I only attended selected student events that could add value to me. I mostly spend my time learning or working. However, I participated in every party organised in my final semester, from final year week to dinner night. It was my last semester at the University of Lagos, so I made sure I enjoyed it and did not forget my goal of being the best graduating student. In my final year, we had a favourable lecture timetable that allowed me to engage in various social activities.

What Was Your Worst Undergraduate Moment?

My worst moment as an undergraduate occurred during my third year, second semester when my dream of graduating with a 5.00 CGPA was shattered by two non-accounting courses. Before this moment, I had maintained a perfect 5.00 CGPA till my 300-level first semester. In the second semester, I had a B and a C in the two non-accounting courses, resulting in a GPA of 4.61 and a CGPA of 4.93. Upon reflecting on my results, I realized what I needed to improve. That semester, I wasn’t feeling well, which made it difficult for me to study for my exams. Additionally, I underestimated the workload required for the two courses. However, I was able to bounce back in my final two semesters, achieving 5.00s once again.

Four Years Course Became A Six Year Journey, How Does Incessant Strike Affect Your Mental Health And Wellbeing?

The uncertainty caused by the constant strikes and COVID lockdown was frustrating because I never envisioned that earning my degree would take me more time. However, it did not affect my mental health or well-being. I used those periods to complete data analysis and financial modelling courses, such as data analysis from Udacity and Financial Modelling and Valuation Analyst (FMVA) from the Corporate Finance Institute (CFI). I also spent more time with my family and became a chartered accountant. The principle was to do what I know when I do not know what to do.

Did you go Into any relationship during your undergraduate days?

No, I did not.

You Don’t Have Any Babe After Spending 6 Years In UNILAG?

I had one at some point, But currently, I am not in a relationship.

What Do You Think The University System Should Improve On?

The university system shines by providing educational opportunities that extend beyond the classroom through various student-led initiatives. These initiatives help enhance skills in problem-solving, teamwork, and entrepreneurship. Additionally, the university offers internet connectivity and digital learning resources that improve online education and research capabilities.

However, there is a need for the university to strengthen its collaborations with industries for internships, mentorship programs, and co-curricular projects. Furthermore, modernising the curriculum to include industry-relevant content will better equip students with the needed practical experience.

Is There Any Financial And Non-finacial Reward For Being A First Class Student Either Within Or Outside The University?

Yes, there are several rewards, such as scholarships and internships. My notable reward was when I got a call from the UNILAG senate to meet UNILAG’s alumni from the United Kingdom. I was also given a cash prize by the alumni for my academic excellence as the best student in the faculty of management science.

What Is Your Plan After NYSC?

After completing my NYSC, I plan to embark on my journey to become a renowned leader in the finance industry.
