NYSC DG Charges Corps members on Commitment to National Service, Warns Against Travel-Related Abscondment

Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), has reaffirmed the importance of national service, urging Corps Members to remain committed throughout the service year rather than abandoning the programme in pursuit of overseas travel.

This message formed part of his address to 2025 Batch ‘A’ Stream II Corps Members during his working visit to the Orientation Camp in Ogun State.

Brigadier General Nafiu emphasized that national service is a vital contribution to the nation’s development, charging Corps Members to give their best in every sector they are deployed to. He stressed that leaving the country without completing the service year is a serious offense, carrying stringent penalties for evaders and absconders.

“Obtain your Certificate of National Service before considering any foreign travel,” the DG cautioned. He further advised the Corps Members to be vigilant and security-conscious at all times, avoiding risky adventures that may endanger their lives.

Addressing matters of discipline, General Nafiu reminded the Corps Members of the importance of conforming to the Scheme’s dress code. He condemned improper dressing and encouraged them to uphold the image of the NYSC by dressing decently and responsibly.

He encouraged positive engagement during the service year, advising the youths to foster meaningful friendships, invest their time wisely, and use social media constructively. Additionally, he highlighted the importance of vocational development, urging Corps Members to acquire at least two skills through the NYSC Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme for post-service self-reliance.

“Save part of your monthly allowance rather than spending it on non-essentials,” he advised.

In a moment of celebration, Corps Members who marked their birthdays were treated to a special cake-cutting ceremony as part of the DG’s visit.

Presenting her report during the Ogun State camp visit, the State Coordinator, Mrs. Olayinka Diana Nasamu, reported that 2,602 Corps Members (1,148 males and 1,454 females) were duly registered. She noted that the Corps Members had shown commendable conduct and adjusted well to the demands of orientation camp life.

“All camp officials are carrying out their responsibilities with diligence and synergy, contributing to a smooth and effective Orientation Course,” she concluded.
