Princess(Dr) Adebunmi Osadahun(JP) has expressed optimism that security concerns will be a thing of the past if youths thread with caution and avoid unreasonable outings,indecent dressing, Get rich quick syndrome, cultism and rituals which is one of the avenues to stem the tide of insecurity in our schools.
She disclosed this at the Maiden Edition of the Elizade University Press Club media lecture tagged: The Role of Media in 2023 Elections: Tackling insecurity,Low Women Participation and Voters Responsibility held at the Faculty of Law Auditorium.
Osadahun stated that women had survived the long existed negative conceptions and stereotypes against women participation which had saw the emergence of women doing great things.
She appreciated Governor Rotimi Akeredolu for believing in women by appointing women into key positions in Ondo State.
The Commissioner calls for a gender sensitive constitution,wider than the extant 1990 narrow constitution to allow more women inclusivity.
She therefore congratulated the organisers of the Elizade university first Press Week and Founder of the University,Chief Micheal Ade-Ojo for doing a good job through the establishment of the University and training of future leaders.
Speaking on the role of media in the 2023 election, SP Funmi Funmilayo Odunlami,Ondo State Public Relations Officer call for more robust relationship between the media and the Nigeria police Force adding that journalists and bloggers should avoid sensational headlines which is fast tearing the nation apart.
She also admonished journalists to always ask questions before rushing to publish.
Odunlami congratulated the organisers and advise young people to be security conscious and avoid flamboyant lifestyle.
In addition,Mr. Tope Fayehun,Chairman,NUJ Correspondent Chapel,Ondo State and Mr Tosin Adesile,Journalist and Social Commentator spoke separately and advised Mass communication students to always very their information before publishing as they progresses in their career.
Fayehun explained that many journalists publishes information without capturing the other side of the story because of the reluctance of some public relations officers to respond adequately.
“Don’t forget that news are processed instantaneously in today’s world”, he said.
Mr. Tosin Adesile spoke on the need for a standard regulatory body for social media regulation and to discourage misinformation in Nigeria.
On Voters responsibility, Dr. Wole Adamolekun,an associate Professor of Media and Communication advised the youths that votes will only count If they come out to vote during election period but warns against hanging around in the risk areas.
Adamolekun reiterated that safety first before any other thing.
Elizade University Press Club is an organisation of campus Journalist open to all students irrespective of Faculties and departments that promote responsible journalism among the students’ population.
