By Damilare Adeleye

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has arrested four minors for allegedly stealing iron rods and other building materials from an uncompleted building in the Guzape area of Abuja, the nation’s capital.

The suspects were identified as Matthew Vincent (15), Timothy Shedrack (15), Moses Vincent (11) and Lucky Enock.Their arrest followed a complaint lodged at the Guzape Police Station after residents noticed suspicious activity at the construction site.

Witnesses reported hearing loud noises and observing swift movements as the minors dismantled materials from the building during nighttime.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the minors scaled the fence of the uncompleted building and used crude tools to remove the iron rods, which were allegedly sold to a local scrap dealer known as “Babanbola.”

Authorities believe Babanbola is part of a larger network facilitating the theft and illegal sale of construction materials.

Efforts are ongoing to track him down and dismantle the network.

The Commissioner of Police, FCT, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, emphasized the role of parents and guardians in monitoring their children’s activities, especially during late hours.

He urged parents to provide proper guidance to prevent their wards from engaging in criminal behavior.

Community members are encouraged to report suspicious activities promptly to the police, support community-based safety initiatives aimed at curbing juvenile delinquency and verify sources of materials before purchase, particularly by scrap dealers and business owners.

Additionally, construction site owners are advised to deploy security personnel at construction sites and install surveillance systems to monitor activities.

According to the police, the minors will be transferred to juvenile homes for rehabilitation. Those found culpable will face legal consequences as stipulated by the law.

The FCT Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining law and order while stressing the importance of community vigilance in deterring crimes involving minors.

This incident underscores the urgent need for collective efforts to prevent juvenile crime and create a safer society for all.
