Hoodlums has attacked Independent National Electoral Commission,(INEC) Office in Enugu State.
The incident happened on Sunday 16th May, 2021.
Emeka Ononamadu, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC)Enugu State who reported the attack on the State Headquarter’s office of the Commission in Enugu.
According to Festus Okoye, some unidentified person overpowered the security personnel on duty around 9:00pm and tried to set the entire building ablaze.
The attention of the security agencies as well as the Federal and State fire service in Enugu has been drawn to the unfolding situation and they responded swiftly.
The attackers set the foyer ablaze, vandalized some offices in the main building and caused extensive damage to some of the commission’s movable assets within the premises.
Utilility pick up vehicle (Toyota Hilux),Six(6) were burnt while two (2) more were smashed and damaged. The security agencies who where at the scene and have started investigation.
As earlier stated in our statement, the spate of attacks on the commission’s facilities portend danger to the national electoral activities.
The commission is holding an emergency meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners on Wednesday 19th May 2021, and further statement will be released ahead of all security agencies in the country under the auspices of the inter- Agency Consultative committee on election security (ICCES).
