The Senate of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) has elected Professor Matthew Olusoji Ilori as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics and Research).

Ilori, who currently serves as Director of Academic Planning, was elected at the Senate’s statutory meeting held on Wednesday, March 25, 2026. He secured 192 votes, representing 91 per cent, to defeat Professor Michael Babatunde Adegbile of the Faculty of Architecture, who polled 19 votes.

His appointment, which is subject to ratification by the University’s Governing Council, will take effect from March 27, 2026, for a tenure of two years.

A distinguished alumnus of the institution, Ilori holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology (Second Class Upper), a Master of Philosophy in Microbiology, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Microbiology, all from UNILAG.

Over the years, he has served the university in several capacities, including Chairman of the Board of the Institute of Maritime Studies, Deputy Chairman of the Academic Programmes Committee of the School of Postgraduate Studies, and Dean of the Faculty of Science.

The Vice-Chancellor, Folasade Ogunsola, on behalf of the Senate, management, staff, and students, congratulated Ilori on his election and wished him a successful tenure.
