Windstorm wrecks NYSC camp facilities in Niger as Bago orders immediate repairs

Governor Umaru Bago of Niger State has ordered the immediate rehabilitation of buildings damaged by a windstorm at the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, permanent orientation camp in Paiko.

The windstorm, which occurred on April 25, 2026, destroyed parts of several camp facilities, forcing temporary adjustments for corps members undergoing orientation in the state. No deaths or injuries were reported.

The directive was contained in a statement issued on Sunday by Bologi Ibrahim the governor’s Chief Press Secretary.

According to the statement, Governor Bago described the incident as unfortunate and concerning, noting that the destruction had created hardship for corps members and officials at the camp.

Following the incident, an assessment team visited the orientation camp to inspect the level of damage and recommend urgent interventions.

The team included Dr Hadiza Mohammed; the Commissioner for Education, Jacob Baba-Yisa; Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Brig. Gen. Olakunle Nafiu; Director-General of NYSC, and Mrs Martina Shuaibu-Ibrahim, the state coordinator.

The damaged structures include male corps members’ hostels, the multi-purpose hall, the camp kitchen, staff quarters and sections of the residence of the state coordinator.

Bago said immediate repairs were necessary to ensure corps members continue their three-week orientation programme without major disruption.

He also praised the swift response of camp officials and members of the assessment team in managing the situation after the storm.

The governor specifically commended the principal and management of Abubakar Dada Secondary School for making classrooms available as temporary accommodation for corps members affected by the destruction.

The temporary relocation was aimed at ensuring the safety and comfort of corps members while repair works begin.

Bago further reassured the NYSC management that his administration remains committed to the welfare, security and well-being of all corps members serving in Niger State.

The NYSC orientation camp in Paiko hosts prospective corps members posted to Niger State for mandatory orientation exercises before deployment to their places of primary assignment.
