The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has intensified its environmental enforcement campaign in the Ayobo-Ipaja axis, sealing four markets and plazas over alleged persistent violations of waste disposal regulations.
The enforcement operation, conducted on Sunday by the LAWMA Project WISE team in the Ikeja West District, was aimed at preventing indiscriminate dumping and addressing recurring waste accumulation across the area.
Facilities sealed by the authority include Rock of Age Plaza, Ajerogun I Market, Ayobo Market and Oba Plaza, all located within Ayobo.
The Managing Director/CEO of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said the affected facilities had repeatedly failed to comply with environmental directives issued by the authority.
Gbadegesin explained that the enforcement was carried out alongside ongoing waste evacuation and sanitation operations across the Ayobo-Ipaja corridor.
He said LAWMA teams had evacuated accumulated waste from several locations, including Oluwaga Bus Stop by Sawmill, Ayobo Road median by Rainoil, Atan Nla by TCN, Ayobo Police Post and Megida Bus Stop.
According to him, the authority would sustain monitoring and enforcement after waste evacuation to prevent cleared areas from becoming waste black spots again.
Gbadegesin urged residents, traders and business owners within the axis to cooperate with LAWMA by patronising their designated Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators and using approved channels for waste disposal.
He warned that the authority would continue to enforce environmental regulations against markets, plazas, businesses and individuals whose activities contribute to indiscriminate waste disposal.
