The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested a 32-year-old man, Ndifreke Isaiah Nelson, for allegedly murdering his girlfriend, Emem Monday Effanga, 39, and stealing her mobile phone.

DSP Timfon John, State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), revealed this during a press briefing on Monday. She stated that the suspect was tracked and apprehended at a church in Uyo following intelligence reports.

According to John, police received a report in February 2025 that Effanga was found dead in her apartment under suspicious circumstances. Upon arrival, officers observed visible marks of v+olence on her face and neck, indicating she had been strangled and beaten.

The scene was processed, and her body was transported to the hospital, where medical personnel confirmed her death.
Investigations led detectives to Nelson, who was the last person seen with the deceased.

Reports indicate that he had visited her home on the morning of February 6, 2025—his birthday.

During interrogation, Nelson confessed to killing Effanga after she refused to let him use her phone to take birthday photos for social media. A struggle ensued, during which he allegedly strangled her and struck her head against the floor before fleeing with her mobile device.

Police later recovered the stolen 1-tel Super Phone from the suspect at the time of his arrest. A post-mortem examination has confirmed the cause of death, and Nelson is set to be charged in court.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, assured that justice will be served and reiterated the command’s commitment to tackling domestic violence and criminal activities. He urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to law enforcement.
