The Presidential Initiative for Unlocking the Healthcare Value Chain (PVAC) welcomed a research team from University College London (UCL) and Peking University (PKU) as part of an ongoing study assessing the feasibility and potential impact of local manufacturing of diagnostic products in Nigeria. The study supports Wondfo Biotech, a leading Chinese diagnostics manufacturer, in evaluating plans to establish local production capacity in the country.

During the visit, discussions highlighted both opportunities and challenges in strengthening Nigeria’s healthcare manufacturing ecosystem. The researchers, led by Prof. Ibrahim Abubakar, noted that local manufacturing is a strategic solution to address Africa’s dependence on imported pharmaceuticals and diagnostics, a reliance that has contributed to fragile supply chains, high costs, and limited health system resilience. Their work aims to provide evidence and insights to guide sustainable investment and industrial partnerships in Nigeria’s health sector.
PVAC National Coordinator, Dr. Abdu Mukhtar emphasized the significance of collaborations that merge research, industry, and government priorities. He said, “For Nigeria, local manufacturing is not just about production, it is about health security, resilience, and building the foundations of a health economy that can serve people reliably and competitively.”
The findings from the UCL and PKU study will be shared with academic institutions, international organizations, and industry stakeholders, contributing to a broader evidence base for health sector industrialization efforts in Africa.
