The National Opposition Summit held in Ibadan on Saturday may reshape Nigeria’s political landscape, as key opposition figures resolved to form a united front to defend democracy.

The summit, convened by Seyi Makinde, Oyo State Governor brought together major political leaders including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar; former Labour Party Presidential candidate Peter Obi; NNPP’s Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso; former Osun Governor Rauf Aregbesola; and former Senate President David Mark.
In a statement after the meeting by Atiku Abubakar, he said attendees “spoke with one voice, fearless and unmistakable” on the need for unity.
“The time has come to forge a united opposition, bound by purpose and driven by the sacred duty to defend and sustain our democracy,” Atiku said. “This is not a choice; it is an obligation we owe to Nigeria and to generations yet unborn.”
He commended Governor Makinde as “Chief Host” and praised the people of Oyo State “for providing the ground upon which this historic resolve has been rekindled.”
“Oyo State has a history of being present when the politics of Nigeria is to be defined,” Atiku added.
The Ibadan gathering signals renewed efforts by opposition parties to collaborate ahead of future elections amid concerns over governance and democratic institutions.
No communique was released at press time, but sources at the meeting said discussions focused on electoral reforms, coalition strategies, and joint advocacy.
