The Rivers State Police Command has commenced an investigation into the death of a 22-year-old University of Port Harcourt graduate, Anthony Obodo, following a shooting involving a police officer in Port Harcourt.

The officer, identified as Corporal Alfred Louis, has been detained alongside members of his team at the State Criminal Investigation Department for questioning.

The incident occurred on August 27, 2026, after an altercation reportedly broke out between Obodo and the officer. The police said the confrontation escalated into a scuffle, during which a firearm was discharged.

Obodo died from injuries sustained in the shooting, while two other passers-by were also reportedly injured.

Following the incident, an angry mob allegedly attacked Corporal Louis, leaving him with multiple injuries.

The Rivers State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Blessing Agabe Kaborlo, disclosed the development in a statement issued on Friday.

The Command described the incident as condemnable and said it did not reflect professional policing.

According to the police, the officer will face appropriate disciplinary measures if found culpable, based on the outcome of the investigation.

The Command also assured residents that it would not protect any officer found to have engaged in unethical conduct capable of damaging the reputation of the Nigeria Police Force.

Obodo, who was 22, was reportedly a recent graduate of the University of Port Harcourt.
