The Nigerian communication community has been thrown into mourning following the death of veteran communication scholar and former journalist, Professor Idowu Akanbi Sobowale, OON, at the age of 85.
According to Professor Rotimi Olatunji, he said Sobowale died in the early hours of Thursday, October 8, 2026, crediting the statement issued by a member of his family, Dr Akinniyi I. Sowunmi.
The deceased was described as a father figure to members of the communication community, particularly the Association of Communication Scholars and Professionals in Nigeria (ACSPN).
In the statement titled “Transition to Glory,” Sowunmi described the development as “a very sad day” for the communication community in Nigeria and especially members of the association.
He said Professor Sobowale had “joined the saints triumphant” on Thursday morning, October 8, 2026.
The statement read in part: “This is a very sad day for us in the Communication Community in Nigeria and especially for us at the Association of Communication Scholars & Professionals in Nigeria. Our father, Pa Deacon Professor Idowu Akanbi Sobowale, OON, 85, joined the saints triumphant this morning, October 8, 2026.”
The family said details of the funeral arrangements would be announced at a later date.
