The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has cleared the backlog of accumulated waste in Afariogun Ward, Oshodi, in the second week of its waste evacuation intervention.
The exercise was co-led by Kunle Adebiyi, LAWMA Executive Director, Finance, and Hassan Sanuth, Director of Sanitation Services, Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, with deployment of staff and equipment across streets in the ward.
Following the clearance, the ward was handed over to its Private Sector Participation (PSP) operator, Messrs Excellence Limited, to sustain regular collection and prevent a recurrence.
The Authority urged all PSP operators to avoid selective service and provide waste collection to every household and commercial facility within their assigned areas, warning that enforcement measures would be applied against non-compliant households and businesses.
LAWMA said the intervention adopts a ward-by-ward approach to addressing accumulated waste across Oshodi, with Mafoluku Ward scheduled as the next area of focus, followed by Ogunoloko, Ewu-tuntun and Shogunle.
It also urged residents to pay outstanding debts based on the old rate while discussions continue among the Community Development Committee (CDC), the Local Government and the State to finalise the tariff review.
The Authority emphasised that the backlog cleared in Afariogun must not be allowed to return and called on residents to support efforts to sustain a clean and healthy environment, reiterating its commitment to timely evacuation and improved service delivery across the state.
